The effectiveness of ginger and mint leaves in overcoming emesis gravidarum in pregnant women in the first trimester

Abstract

Nausea and vomiting or emesis gravidarum is a common complaint experienced by pregnant women in the first trimester, with symptoms of nausea accompanied by excessive vomiting and usually occurs in the morning or often also called morning sickness. Pregnant women also experience physiological changes caused by an increase in the hormones progesterone and estrogen. As a result, pregnant women in the first trimester often experience nausea and even vomiting. In dealing with emesis gravidarum in first trimester pregnant women, it can be treated by  pharmacological and non-pharmacological methods. One way to deal with emesis gravidarum in first trimester pregnant women is by consuming herbal drinks such as ginger and mint leaves. The purpose of this study is to determine the effectiveness of drinking ginger and miin leaves to reduce emesis gravidarum in first trimester pregnant women. The research method is a literature review using an electronic database, namely Google Scholar using three keywords, namely "emesis gravidarum". ginger” and “mint leaves”. The results found six journals for review. Six journals stated that ginger was more effective than mint in reducing emesis gravidarum in the first trimester of pregnant women.
