Presentation Title:

Behavior of serum luteinizing hormone level after metformin treatment in infertile women with insulin resistance

Abstract

Background: Insulin resistance conditions the appearance of hyperinsulinemia; this, in turn, is associated with an increase in luteinizing hormone.

Objective: To determine whether there is a decrease in serum luteinizing hormone concentration following oral doses of 425 mg of metformin 3 times daily in infertile women with insulin resistance.

Materials and methods: Clinical, quasi-experimental, analytical, longitudinal and prospective trial carried out to evaluate the behavior of serum luteinizing hormone concentrations from a baseline and post-treatment measurement with metformin in infertile women with insulin resistance. For quantitative variables, the arithmetic means and standard deviation, minimum and maximum values of each were calculated. For qualitative variables, frequency measures, expressed as percentages, were calculated by ANOVA.

Results: Thirty-eight patients with insulin resistance and infertility and age limits of 18 and 40 years, with any infertility factor and HOMA-IR index greater than 2.5 were studied. It was found that by decreasing hyperinsulinemia with metformin intake lutein- izing hormone concentrations were significantly reduced.

Conclusions: Since luteinizing hormone concentrations decrease with metformin intake, metformin, as confirmed in this and other studies, is indicated to increase ovulatory cycles in infertile patients with insulin resistance.
