A case of glassy cell carcinoma, stage IB1 of the cervix in association with pregnancy
Abstract
Cancer in pregnancy is an uncommon incidence, accounting for around 0.07-0.1% of all malignant tumors. Cervical cancer is the most common gynecological cancer during pregnancy. Glassy cell carcinoma (GCC) is a rare histological form of mixed adenosquamous cervical cancer that is highly aggressive and generally has a poor prognosis. We present the case of a 38-year-old woman whose routine cytology revealed a high grade squamous intraepithelial lesion (HSIL). A colposcopy-guided cervical punch biopsy was performed, revealing a histopathologic result of glassy cell carcinoma of the cervix, Stage 1B1. The management of GCC remains challenging, but a consensus has been reached through different services. The patient underwent neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NACT), delivered via classical cesarean section at 36th weeks age of gestation, and underwent radical hysterectomy with bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy and bilateral pelvic lymph node dissection one month postpartum, confirming the presence of glassy cell carcinoma.
