Literature review: Effectiveness of calcium supplementation on the incidence of preeclampsia
Abstract
Calcium is one of the crucial elements in nutrition and food issues. One method to prevent hypertension during pregnancy is by consuming calcium. This study aims to review the effectiveness of calcium supplementation on the incidence of preeclampsia. The type of research through literature review/literature study is a method that integrates more than one study with a similar theme that is reviewed to produce a final conclusion. The appropriate database from the literature search on the internet through the Pubmed, Garuda, Google Scholar databases. The results found that from the 7 articles reviewed where in terms of the approach or research method used, the type of research was the same: quantitative but the design used used an experimental design and analytical observational studies, although the research methodology was different but had the same research objective, namely measuring or testing the effectiveness of calcium supplementation in pregnant women on the incidence of preeclampsia which proved effective calcium in lowering blood pressure in pregnant women. The conclusion in this review shows that proper calcium intake can prevent preeclampsia, and that pregnant women need to get enough calcium between 1500 and 2000 mg per day. Calcium can be given at twenty weeks of pregnancy or the second trimester, and 7 journals noted that pregnant women showed a decrease in blood pressure after calcium was given.
