Relationship between birth complications and externalizing behavioral disorders among children and adolescents

Abstract

Introduction: Exposure to obstetric complication is known to be associated with development of psychiatric disorders. The aim of the study was to see association of externalizing behaviors in children and adolescents with birth complications in a tertiary care hospital in Bangladesh.

Methods: It was a cross sectional study conducted among 96 cases between July,18 to June,19. Birth complications and psychosocial adversity were assessed from hospital record and from parental interviews and externalizing behavioral problems were assessed by Psychiatrist according to DSM-5. The frequency and severity of externalizing disorders were analyzed by chi-square test and paired-t test. P-value ≤ 0.05 was significant. Data analysis was done by SPSS version-26.

Results: Present study observed ADHD among 54.1%, ODD among 19.4%, Conduct Disorder among 5.1% and 21.4% were suffering from ADHD & ODD. 48.9% were within 10-14 years, male were79.1%. Muslim were 95.8%, 57.2% were eldest, 66.6% were from nuclear family. Obstetric complications have no significant relationship with externalizing disorders.

Conclusion: Title is known about the relationship between birth complications and externalizing behavior. The study revealed no significant relation between birth complications and externalizing behavior. So, steps are required to rule out other factors which may contribute significant role to develop externalizing disorders.

S.M.Sayful Islam a male psychiatrist from Bangladesh, completed MD in Psychiatry in 2017 from BSMMU(Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Medical University), Shahbag, Dhaka, working as Assistant Professor in Department of Psychiatry, Khulna Medical College, Khulna, Bangladesh. He is a life member of BAP (Bangladesh Association of Psychiatrist) and General secretary of BAP-South. He had many oral presentations in different National and international Scientific program and has 2 publications to his own credit. He has special interest in the field of Neuro-Psychiatry.
