Presentation Title:

A retrospective study of necrophilia in a Tertiary Care Medical College and Hospital

Abstract

Necrophilia in known as a paraphilic disorder which involves sexual activity with a dead body and poses significant forensic, medicolegal, ethical and human rights challenges. In case of mortuary, forensic difficulty primarily lies not only in detecting the necrophilia but also the differentiation from antemortem sexual activity and postmortem deposition. False positive interpretations which may arise from postmortem changes, decomposition, handling artifacts and contamination. This retrospective, descriptive and analytical study was conducted in the Department of Forensic Medicine, Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College, Dhaka, involving 100 female medicolegal autopsy cases across different age groups according to the decades of their age ranging from 11 to 50. 25 samples were taken from each group. Required datas were collected from autopsy records book, laboratory investigations and histopathological findings with primarily focusing on the detection and interpretation of semen and DNA. Investigations identified matched DNA profiles in multiple dead bodies from the 11 to 20 years old age group and later confirmed postmortem semen deposition by necrophilic acts conducted by a mortuary staff. The findings brought into light about fallacies in semen detection, biochemical limitations, time of deposition, role of histopathology and contextual correlation. This study reveals gaps in the institutional infrastructure, mortuary staff training, psychological evaluation, demographical boundaries and professional safeguard. Necrophilia is not only considered as psychiatric or criminal issue but also a forensic risk management concern and this can be prevented by improving forensic protocols, mortuary infrastructure, proper structured training, psychological screening of mortuary personnel, all of which can ensure accurate medicolegal opinions and hold the dignity of the deceased.
