Assessment of level of patient-satisfaction in outpatient Department of Tertiary Care Hospitals in Bangladesh

Abstract

A six-month cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted in the outpatient departments of Jalalabad Ragib Rabeya Medical College Hospital, Park View Medical College Hospital, and Women’s Medical College Hospital in Sylhet. A total of 400 patients, both male and female aged 18 years and above, were included. Data were collected using a pre-tested and validated semi-structured questionnaire. The study population comprised 65.5% male and 34.5% female respondents, of whom 29% were illiterate and 71% were educated. The mean satisfaction score was highest in the general satisfaction domain (4.32) and lowest in the financial aspect domain (2.62). Employed respondents (mean score = 3.84) reported higher satisfaction compared to unemployed respondents (mean score = 3.69). Married participants were also more satisfied than unmarried participants regarding healthcare received. The study identified educational level, place of residence, marital status, age, sex, and occupation as important factors influencing patient satisfaction in the outpatient departments of tertiary care hospitals in the Sylhet division.

Md. Arifur Rahman is working as a Lecturer in department of Community Medicine of Jalalabad Ragib Rabeya Medical College, Sylhet, Bangladesh science 1st February 2015. He is a Public Health Specialist, specializing in Community Medicine & Hospital Management.
